The lunar Mid-Autumn night is still 29 September 2026. Two earlier stops are already on the calendar. Gurney Plaza posted its Moonlit Reunion activation on 3 September, and myPenang lists an official Penang Mid-Autumn Festival carnival at the Esplanade on 19 September from 5pm to 11pm. If you want lanterns and boxed cakes before Weld Quay fills, those are the dates.
The Clan Jetties walk on the 29th is covered separately. This page is the mall and the padang. Gurney Plaza's What's New tile is a square lantern graphic, not a full programme PDF. Treat it as a live atrium fair, then check the ground floor when you arrive. AllEvents had already listed a Mid Autumn Mooncake Fair at the mall from 1 September. The 3 September post is the mall's own confirmation that the theme is running.
What to buy at Gurney before you hit the jetties
Penang Road bakeries still do the serious lotus paste work. Gurney is the air-conditioned version: hotel boxes, chain bakeries, and the new Lavender Bakery in Basement One if you want a Johor bun more than a traditional mooncake. Lavender opened on 15 July at 170-B1-06/07/08. Coconut buns are RM4, chicken floss RM4.90. It is not a mooncake house. It is a useful stop if one person in the group wants pastry and another wants a lantern photo in the atrium.
Paris Baguette in the same mall is running a sandwich-and-drink set from RM25 from 13 August onward, with soup at RM9.90. That is lunch, not festival food. Mention it only because the mall's September feed is mixing Malaysia Day CapitaPlus offers with the mooncake artwork. Do not expect the atrium to replace a proper boxed mooncake from a Chinese bakery on Penang Road.
19 September at Padang Kota Lama
myPenang's listing is blunt: Penang Mid-Autumn Festival 2026, 丙午年情溢中秋, 19 September, 5pm to 11pm, Esplanade. That is Padang Kota Lama, the old parade ground by Fort Cornwallis, not Chew Jetty. The poster is the programme you should screenshot. Street stalls, lion dance, and lanterns usually sit on the grass and along the sea wall. The 19th is a Saturday. Rapid Penang buses along Light Street and a Grab to the clock tower are the cleanest arrivals. Parking around the padang is poor once the lights go on.
The 19th carnival is a state-facing show. The 29th is the actual 15th night of the eighth lunar month, when families walk the Clan Jetties. You can do both. You should not treat the Esplanade Saturday as the only date. If you can only pick one night for food, pick the 29th and walk Weld Quay, then eat mooncake after. If you can only pick one night for a staged carnival, pick the 19th.
How this week fits the rest of September
Malaysia Day on 16 September is a Wednesday public holiday. The Esplanade carnival sits three days later. Gurney stays useful on the holiday itself if rain kills an outdoor plan. The Hungry Ghost month ends 10 September, so the incense on the lanes should be gone by the time lanterns go up. Do not mix the two calendars. Seventh month is for altars. Eighth month is for mooncakes.
